Sweet and Sour

Redbach is a Belgian beer imported by Duvel that even the non-beer drinking population can enjoy. As the label reads, “Soothingly sweet, wickedly sour, Redbach is a tantalizing blend of Rodenbach Flemish Sour Ale and 100% natural cherry juice.” If you are not familiar with what Flemish Sour Ale is “this beer’s distinguishing features from a technical viewpoint are a specially roasted malt, fermentation by a mixture of several ‘ordinary’ high-fermenting yeasts and a lactobacillus culture (the same type of bacteria yogurt is made with) and maturation in oak. The result is a mildly strong ‘drinking’ beer with a deep reddish-brown color and a distinctly acidic yet fruity and mouthy taste.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_beer#Flemish_Red)

Redbach combines the refreshing taste of a sour ale with cherry juice to create a taste unlike any beer I’ve had before. It’s more than fair to say that Redbach, as well as almost any sour ale, is not exactly what one would call a Man’s Beer. In fact, if I were craving a good hearty beer, this would be nowhere near the top of my list. However, this is the type of beer that I expect to find myself drinking on a hot summer day… light and refreshing. It pours as a cherry red color with very little head. It smells much like a sweet cherry candy. All in all, it’s a good beer that even my wife would drink.
